1.How are the Chinese soldiers portrayed in these prints? The Japanese soldiers?
The Chinese soldiers are portrayed as very ugly and weak beings. Corpses of Chinese soldiers are often found scattered in the prints. In contrast, Japanese soldiers are shown in heroic and victorious situations, with piles of dead Chinese soldiers underfoot. Even at sea, Japanese ships stand tall while Chinese ships are sinking and burning. The Japanese soldiers are also often seen carrying Chinese babies during battle, which helps the viewers think that they’re heroic.
2. Look at the weapons used by each side, are they different? How? Does this tell us anything about Japanese technological advancement?
The Chinese are seen using spears and somewhat traditional ships. However, the Japanese soldiers are using rifles and modern, huge battleships for the war. This tells us that Japan is greatly developed in terms of technology.
3. Why do sports often become symbolic battlegrounds between nations?
Sports often become symbolic battlegrounds between nations because to some people sports were a symbol of national strength, and baseball became a way in Japan’s quest for gaining national self-respect.
4. Is imperialism/colonialism simply about militarily and politically controlling another nation, or is it also about proving one’s self-perceived cultural superiority over another?
Imperialism/colonialism is more than just militarily and politically controlling another nation because imperialists often tried to get rid of the natives’ culture and impose their own. They are trying to prove their self-perceived culture superiority and get rid of the other’s

Russo-Japanese War
1. Photographs depict the heroics of war better because in artistic renditions, Japanese soldiers portray courage, bravery, and they are often found protecting young children. In contrast, the Chinese and Russians, their enemies, are portrayed as weak, frantic, and devil-like (expression). However, photographs allow the viewers to get a true image of the war without bias from any side.
I still believe photographs depict wars better because they portray weapons, military tactics and soldiers’ behavior far more better than wood prints.
3. If the medium used was a photograph or an unbiased essay, the meaning would be clear and straight-forward. However, when certain events are depicted on a painting, drawing, etc., the artist’s interpretation is incorporated into the piece of work, thus it becomes unbiased. Therefore, the medium does affect the message
4. 1905 is an important turning point for the Japanese because it became the first Asian world power after defeating the Russians in the Russo-Japanese War. If Japan lost the Russo-Japanese War, Korea would not have been colonized

born in 1851 got married to Gojong at age 14—became queen of Joseon Dynasty
Why was she chosen to be queen:
she was chosen because Taewongun (king's father) thought that the young queen would be compatible with his son and she will be good wife (easily controlled?)
Was this a wise choice?
Majority: yes. She is intelligent and made a lot of accomplishments (making progressive reforms, develop modern tech., build infrastructure, policy of balancing Chinese Russian and Japanese interest in Korea (much like Thailand = French VS British)
Confucius POV: woman having that much authority = bad.
Tries to buy time by making imperialists compete w/ each other
